Let The Builders Build

Recently, I had the opportunity to help out at a LEGO camp for kids. Our goal was for each group to build components of a larger set. Combined, these components made up a structure that simulated the process of energy production, storage, and utilization. In my group we had a simple yet effective system: we had a designated builder, who was given the instructions, and finders, who were tasked with locating the right pieces for the builder to assemble. We switched the builder regularly so everyone had a turn and while it sounds straightforward, the finders often found themselves straying from their roles, drawn to the allure of building. I often had to remind the kids to, “let the builders build”, but I too found myself reaching for a piece the finders were overlooking or wanting desperately to grab the legos and just assemble them myself. After the camp was over I spent some time reflecting on the experience and my mantra of “let the builders build”.

This phrase has profound implications on my work as a software engineer. It speaks volumes about the importance of roles, efficiency, and management in the world of software development and the intrinsic difficulty of letting others do their jobs. Too often we minimize the efforts of others’ work, thinking we can do it better or faster. We are drawn to the allure of building, but we must remember that the builders are the ones who know how to build. We must let the builders build.
